Nostalgic '50s at Bora Asmara - 30.08.07

Bora Asmara is a Balinese-inspired restaurant located in Kampung Sungai Penchala, a 5-minute drive from Mutiara Damansara. Their staff were decked out in old-school Malay costumes and served traditional Malay dishes, to commemorate our country's 50th year of independence from the British.

Back in the 1950s, men in uniform usually wore their shorts big and baggy, with penny loafers. This look is what a pageboy or a postman would rock back in the day.

This look was common among civil servants. The man is wearing a baju Melayu cekak musang
and a kain pelikat that is worn like a sarong.

This lady is wearing a baju kebaya with kain batik. The look is quite modern where there are less details on the blouse [usually it's made of lace with embroidery].

This gentleman owns the restaurant and his home is just next door. He's emulating our Father of Independence Tunku Abdul Rahman with his songkok hat, baggy trousers and faux horn-rimmed eyeglasses. Though, Tunku didn't have a beard.
